Is It Safe To Use A Gas Patio Heater Indoors?

This may seem a silly question but a family member has a caravan which they are staying in over the easter holidays. They have an extra bit, like a tent or awning (sp) attached to the side of it which they have a patio heater inside to keep it warm.
I tried to explain to them y'day that you cant use them indoors due to the gases being given off from the patio heater which is run off a gas bottle. They didnt believe me, maybe Im wrong!
Most people who were sitting in the side part of the caravan were either tired, or had a sore head. I tried to explain that is was probably due to the gas patio heater being on indoors, but no one believed me!
They are staying there in the caravan until tuesday with that bloody heater! Which, after a while, not only made me tired but also gave me a sore throat.
Im I right by saying this is dangerous or am I being silly by thinking that?
Im home now anyway so Im not stuck with that heater anymore but i'd like to let them know if its safe.

  1. You are most certainly right.
They give out a tremendous amount of heat and gases which are only safe outdoors.
Get them to read the intruction……….. ONLY TO BE USED OUTDOORS!

  2. You are right.

  3. Very dangerous in enclosed areas! Gas burns oxygen, produces carbon monoxide; that is why home gas heaters are connected to a ventilation outlet. People have died without proper ventilation; they can die in their sleep, or slip into a coma, without any warning.

  4. They’re nuts! Turn the heater off indoors, it gives off noxious waste gases which is why it is an outdoor heater.

  5. My husband says you are right. It is definitely not safe. Our neighbor just went to the hospital a couple of weeks ago because he had a propane portable heater inside the house. He passed out and the ambulance was called….and the fire department too!

  6. Depending on the type of heater, probably not. Type ‘dangers of patio heaters indoors’ into the yahoo search box for all the gen.

  7. One of the gasses given of is Carbon Monoxide (CO). This is absorbed by your lungs in preference to Oxygen, so it will kill quite quickly. Symptoms include headaches and tiredness. Once you are unconscious you are likely to die. This is what happened to those 2 little children on holiday in Greece a couple of years ago.
You can get CO detectors for use on holiday quite cheaply. You could get one to either set you mind at rest or prove to them that its dangerous.
